COPING WITH PAIN

There are many theories on the best way to relieve pain naturally. The most important thing is to plan something. The worse thing you can do is to go into labor with a plan to do so unmedicated with no plan at all to help you cope with your pain. If this is your first baby and you have been speaking to women who tell you their superwoman stories of how they didn't feel pain during childbirth, you need to smile, shake your head, and then plan on feeling pain and figuring out a plan to cope. Pain during childbirth is inevitable. It is afterall called "labor" for a reason. How you deal with the pain is a totally different story.

Having a positive attitude and the willpower to deliver without medication can go a long way. But there are many techniques that will go above and beyond your will power in helping you to relax during the difficult stages of birth. Some of these techniques include controlled breathing, slow and deep for relaxation and short and rapid for controlling the pushing stage. Mental relaxation techniques include either assisted or self-hypnosis, as well as possibly chanting or meditation. Adjusting positions during labor can also help a great deal to relieve pain. Understanding the birthing process and how your body works will help you to understand the importance of positioning during childbirth. Controlling the speed in which your baby is born will also help you to control pain but also will help prevent tearing.

Keep in mind that every individual woman experiences the birth process in a unique way and has a unique level of pain tolerance. You may hear one woman speak of the most painful stage of childbirth as pushing and yet another speaks of pushing being the least painful. Women feel pain in different areas as well. While one woman may feel pain in her lower back, another may have pain in the lower abdomen. Your birthing experience will be unique to you.
