COMPLICATIONS

“It pays to plan ahead. It wasn't raining when Noah built the ark.” But for every well made plan, there should always be a backup. Even the best made plans run in to complications. When it comes to childbirth, it will pay to expect the unexpected. It is true that the majority of childbirths in the United States are uncomplicated, but you never know if you just might be the one that has to face just such a thing.

If something happens and you are informed that your health or that of your unborn child is at stake, it is extremely important to remember that your intention for planning a natural childbirth is to do the best thing for yourself and your baby. So when complications arise, although you may have to abandon your plan, keep in mind that the end result is what is important. A healthy baby and a healthy mom.

Also remember that while you may feel like a failure at the time you are not! Time and unforseen occurance befall us all and when it comes to childbirth, you are often at the mercy of your own body. When labor sets in too early, or your baby has unexpected problems, or your physical health changes, you have no choice but to make an alternate plan to ensure the safe arrival of your most precious gift.

Once you and your baby recover, you will look back on the experience with no less pride than if you had been able to follow your plan in it's entirety. I have yet to meet a mother who doesn't enjoy sharing her childbirth experience with other mothers, whether it is one of no pain and quick labor, or a long painful labor with complications. Childbirth is an amazing and wonderful experience. Rejoice in the fact that you were able to bring life into the world, and do not worry that the process did not go according to plan.
